Scott Irvine

Born in Edinburgh in 1970, Scott was introduced to woodworking at an early age in his grandfather’s workshop. He left school at 16 and decided to follow his inherited passion and train as a carpenter with a local firm in Balerno. In 1993, following a paralysing illness, he was unable to return to his carpentry job, but was determined to carry on working with wood and taught himself the art of woodturning and carving.
In 1998, Scott set up his own business ‘Harmonies in Wood’ and later added a kiln to explore a different medium, experimenting with fusing glass, which he later incorporated into his wooden sculptures.
The designs of his fused glass are inspired by the natural landscape of the Pentland Hills, utilising iridescent and dichroic glass and textures to create a dramatic fusion of effects.
The freshness of his designs continues to suprise and delight an evergrowing number of private and corporate collectors of his work. His ability to challenge the predictable function of the basic form of a bowl has led him to unite wood with different materials such as metals, fused glass and stone.
“I never design a piece before starting work on it; the form of
the final design is developed through working with a particular
blank and interpreting the grain.
Once the basic shape is established through turning the wood on a
lathe, any decorative features are then performed.
I not only like the work to be visually stimulating, but also to
arouse the sense of touch, which is achieved by incorporating
in-laid metals, fused glass, stone and carving.”
Scott’s contemporary designs are exhibited in numerous galleries throughout the UK and he has been fortunate to exhibit in several solo shows in some of Scotland’s finest galleries.
Scott is continually expanding his collection, which now includes fused glass panels and dishes and a range of fused glass jewellery.
